Earlier this month, we reported that 20th Century Fox is testing actresses for the female lead inGambit, withLéa Seydoux(Spectre),Rebecca Ferguson(Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation) andAbbey Lee(Mad Max: Fury Road) all competing for the coveted role of Belladonna (Bella) Boudreaux in thisX-Men spinoff. Today,Deadlinereports that the part was offered toLéa Seydoux. It was also revealed thatRebecca Fergusonhad to drop out of contention after she landed the lead role inThe Girl on the Train.

In the originalcomic books, Belladonna Boudreaux was the daughter of the New Orleans Assassins' Guild leader, who fell in love withRemy LeBeau(Channing Tatum). LeBeau was a member of the Thieves Guild, and was set up with an arranged marriage to Bella to unite both guilds, but Remy was forced to flee to New Orleans. Bella went on to receive her own super powers, producing blasts of plasma. It isn’t known how faithful thissuperhero moviewill be to the source material.

Channing Tatumofficially signed on to star inGambitearlier this month, after it was rumored that he was close to backing out of the project. No other cast members have been attached yet, but a casting breakdown from last month revealed several characters that may appear in the movie. It wasn’t known from the breakdown if any of these roles are connected to characters in the comic books.

Rupert Wyatt(Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is directingGambitfrom a script byJoshua Zetumer(RoboCop), with 20th Century Fox has already handed out an July 16, 2025 release date. The movie will go up against Warner Bros.‘Live by Nightand Universal’sMonster High. Production will begin in New Orleans this fall.
