It’s not long until Battle of Azeroth launches in August, but it seems along with thepre-patchcomes further changes that seem to be permanent. Blizzard announce that players will no longer need to purchase the base game in order to playWorld of Warcraftbut simply a subscription.
World of Warcraft No Longer Requires Base Game Purchase
Up until now, in order to play WoW, players would need to purchase the base game along with the latest expansion and a subscription in order to join WoW.Blizzardnow announce a new change which means those who wish to join WoW or are returning players will only need to purchase a subscription. This will let players level all the way to 110 (level cap of Legion expansion) without having to purchase anything additional. If players wish to access the latest expansion to access the upcoming content, they will need to purchase Battle for Azeroth which is a one time cost of $49.99.
Blizzard have also done away with Battle Chest, which is no longer available for purchase on the Blizzard Shop. It contained the base game, along with all previous expansions and one month subscription.

This is a big change as it definitely gives more incentive for new players to join, test out the game without having to purchase the base game. However, for those who have been playing for a while, it doesn’t seem like Blizzard are rewarding their loyalty, as they have had no choice in the past but to purchase the base game.
