Just days after taking the title of Paramount’s highest grossing domestic release,Top Gun: Maverickhas now levelled up again to take the worldwide title fromTransformers: Age of Extinction. Since arriving in theaters on May 27, theTop Gunfollow-up has now taken $1.208 billion worldwide, which is enough to make it the highest grossing movie in Paramount’s history ahead of theTransformerssequel’s $1.1 billion.
In its eight weeks on release,Top Gun: Maverickhas broken record after record, and while it is only Paramount’s third highest grossing movie at international level, clinching the record for worldwide gross is a huge achievement.Transformers: Age of Extinctionhas been Paramount’s top worldwide earner for eight years, but just like the mightyTitanic’s 25-year domestic record, these things are there to be broken.
After surpassingTitanicon Wednesday, Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures said:
“For 110 years, Paramount Pictures has produced and distributed some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history, including the all-time classic Titanic, which marks its 25th anniversary this year. Top Gun: Maverick is a phenomenal motion picture, and we take deep pride in celebrating this tremendous achievement alongside Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, our marketing and distribution teams, and, of course, all the new and original Top Gun fans, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible.”
It seems that this sentiment will be mirrored by Paramount bosses again, as well as all of those who worked to bringTop Gun: Maverickto screens after a number of years in development, and delays caused by the Covid pandemic. For all of them, it has certainly been worth the wait, and the success may not quite be over yet.

Top Gun: Maverick Can Still Break More Records
While it could appear thatTop Gun: Maverickhas succeeded in besting many other movies to break records in the most effortless way, but that doesn’t mean it is quite finished yet. At the moment, the film sits at 22nd place in the all-time global box office standings, just behindIron Man 3which has a gross of $1.214 billion. As long as audiences keep turning up over the next couple of weeks, the film could find itself breaking into the top 20, passingThe Fate of the Furiousand potentially three big Disney movies,The Incredibles 2, Beauty and The BeastandFrozen. In addition to this, the movie is only a couple of million dollars away on the domestic front from taking overThe Incredibles 2to be the highest-grossing first sequel ever.
Of course in all this, it is worth remembering thatTop Gun: Maverickhas managed to achieve all of this without a release in Russia or China, two of the areas that were probably considered as sure-fire success areas when the original plans for the movie were being drawn up. It would be easy to see that has the movie has these additional territories, it could have been now heading towards being one of the top 10 movies of all time. However, it isn’t likely that anyone is complaining about what the movie has achieved so far.
