Summary

Laura Vandervoort’s Supergirl joins forces with Tom Welling’s Superman as the twoDCKryptonians get their proper costumes in newSmallvilleart. As of May 2024, it has been over a decade since theSmallvilleseries finale aired on The CW, with thelive-actionSupermanTV showstill remaining the longest-running comic book series of all time. However, asSmallvillecontinues to get discovered all over the world by new viewers, many are still hoping the DC TV drama will return at some point and continue this incarnation of the Man of Steel.

One of the dynamics explored throughout the later seasons was Clark Kent’s family relationship with his cousin Kara Zor-El, as Vandervoort was part oftheSmallvillecastduring season 7. While they never got to be seen in their costumes together,Buffy2Villesharednew Smallville artwork of what Krypton’s last heroes would look like if they suited up today.

The closest Vandevoort’s Supergirl ever got to having a costume was duringSmallvilleseason 10, episode 3, titled “Supergirl,” where she donned a proto version of her suit from the comics. The only thing that was missing from her Supergirl outfit was the House of El symbol and the cape.

How A Smallville Sequel Could Make Up For Lost Opportunity

While time will tell ifaSmallvilleTV sequelwill ever happen, there are a lot of reasons why it would benefit Kara and Clark if a revival were to ever happen. Kara has a smaller role inSmallville, having been written out of the show afterSmallvilleseason 7 and only getting a single appearance in season 8. Though the writers brought Kara back in season 10, the story for the Kryptonian cousins didn’t have the ideal ending.

Supergirl’s final on-screen appearance was duringSmallvilleseason 10’s penultimate episode before the two-part series finale, where she didn’t have a single scene with Clark. What made this worse is that, on Jor-El’s request, Kara leaves the present and travels to the future, without even getting to bid farewell to her cousin. Not only would aSmallvillesequel finally allow them to reunite, but this time, they could finally be properly suited up as Superman and Supergirl, respectively.

WhileJames Gunn’s DC Universeis currently the main focus for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios, it’s hard to imagine aSmallvillerevival never getting a chance to come to fruition in some form. GivenSmallville’smassive continued popularity, a series sequel could fit perfectly into DC Studios' Elseworlds brand. Hopefully, whether it is in the near or distant future, aSmallvillecontinuation will happen in some capacity, regardless if it is live-action or in animation.
