The Last of Us was a smash hit for HBO as soon as it started airing in early January 2023 – thefirst season wrapped, premiered, and streamed in full to a rapt audience and rave reviews. From the moment the trailers dropped through its season one finale, its viewership grew and grew into must-watch TV status, and it wasn’t just the fans of the video game who tuned in, viewershipgrew to 8.2 million by the finale.

Recent details give greater context for season two, including the one thing we all really care about: When are we going to see season two hit our streaming screens? 2024 is off the list, but a tease for some time in 2025 gives us a goalpost to look forward to. In the US, as anHBOexclusive, it’ll air on HBO and throughthe Max streaming platform.

The Last of Us Part 1: The stellar game the show is based on

Naughty Dog has once again remastered, arguably, its finest game yet again. This time for the PS5 generation.

A 2025 release date can’t come quick enough for fans

The Last of Us season 2’s new release details

It was announced that we’d get more of The Last of Us on Jul 14, 2025. It had already been hinted at by creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann that they’d love to continue the story on TV (since there is a major sequel in the gaming world to call on), so this is great news for fans new and old. Production began on Feb. 12, asreported by Varietyand confirmed by Mazin, even with Pedro Pascal’s visible arm sling and injury as noted by viewers of the Golden Globes in January.

This is a seriously big-budget show that will take a long while to film and post-produce. We speculated previously that a likely window for the show would be sometime in either late 2024 or early 2025, given the updated shooting schedule.

Naughty Dog has taken to X with a post that officially confirms our hunch to have been correct – The Last of Us season 2 will in fact be released in 2025. Unfortunately, it’s still up in the air as to how far into next year we’ll have to wait for the series to actually drop onto our screens.

HBO’s The Last Of Us showrunners tease that one season isn’t enough to cover Part 2

The Last Of Us Season 2 may have fewer episodes, but could take multiple seasons to cover the game.

Confirmed cast members take on the West Coast

“Every last one of them…”

There are no trailers yet for the second season of The Last of Us. In Naughty Dog’s X post, however, we’re treated to a single piece of promotional material. Above the title and logo, there’s a rainy scene with a road sign that reads “Welcome to Seattle.” In the post itself, the company teases the new season by writing the somewhat obtuse “Every last one of them….” So, the return to the silver screen for Joel and Ellie is imminent. It’s coming – but we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer.

Potential spoilers below if you don’t know the broad story of The Last of Us from the game or haven’t finished season one yet.

If you’ve played the game The Last of Us is based on, even casting details can give hints about who survives. If you are new to this universe, we’re going to spoil it with the next sentence, so look away. There are two big cast members that will return for another season of the show – Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as Ellie and Joel. According to HBO executive Casey Bloy, asreported by our friends at ScreenRant, the show will follow the story of The Last of Us Part 2, which should show a time skip from the first series.

On Feb. 2nd, HBO revealed Canadian and American actressCatherine O’Hara will joinThe Last of Us season two. Casting details released Jan. 9 by HBO on X revealed Kaitlyn Dever will be joining the story for season two as Abby Anderson. We also sawYoung Mazino as JesseandIsabela Merced as Dinacasting announcements over the past months. We expect to see Joel’s brother Tommy return, played again by Gabriel Luna. Where and when we will see these characters in the storyline isn’t yet known, especially as the TV show’s plotline diverges from the games in some small but key ways at various turns, keeping us all on our toes.

Last of Us season two

Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have both said they’re keen to do additional seasons of the show, but teased that the story told by The Last of Us Part 2 game would likely be split into more than one season. This makes sense – it’s a surprisingly huge game that takes around 30 hours to play, and hops through locations and characters pretty quickly.

If split into two parts, the recent announcement confirming a 2025 release date for season two would likely only tell part of the second game’s story. We guess that it could end right with a major twist that occurs about halfway through the game, at an aquarium (for those who know what we’re talking about). This could end the season on a huge cliffhanger and lead into a third season that would really play with people’s expectations and emotions.

The Last of Us Part 2: A fitting swan song for a generation

It’s here! The most highly-anticipated game of a generation has arrived. Does it live up to its hype?

Q: Will we see a The Last of Us season 3?

It looks like we’re really likely to get a third season of The Last of Us, even if it hasn’t officially been commissioned. HBO has confirmed only that a second series is going to be filmed right now, but given the showrunners and creators are planning around more than two, and the first season’s success, you’re able to probably bank on a third run appearing.

With heavy rumors out there that the game series will also be getting a third outing at some point, there seems to be a scope for more seasons down the line for the TV show.

Q: Will season 2 of The Last of Us cover the same material as part 2 of the game?

We can’t be certain about what the next season will do story-wise, but casting confirmations and the recent tease of ‘Welcome to Seattle’ give us lots to compare to the game. As the creators mentioned however, we likely we not see all of the game’s full storyline in season two.

With Dever’s casting as Abby, we could get some of the alternating perspectives between Ellie and Abby, and we know that the show will follow some of the second installment’s plot and setting guidance of the game. Casting confirmation for Jesse and Dina also clues us in that we’ll get some of their stories too and, potentially, another romantic relationship for Ellie. O’Hara’s casting brings more questions than answers, but all the more fun to speculate.
