The Last of Us was one of the first games wereviewed officially as Fextralife, and is one of my favorite games on the PS4. Although enjoying overwhelmingly positive press reception, itdisappointed some userswho found it was not the life-changing experience they had been led to believe it was.
Enter 2016, and 3.5 years after release Naughty Dog’s Creative DirectorNeil Druckmannannounces a sequel is happening, featuring bothJoeland a now olderEllie. Incidentally, it would seem the developers had teased the upcoming reveal back on 26th September 2016 by revealing artwork in celebration for “outbreak day” - but fans had not been able to tell because of the obscure reference to a tattoo for Ellie that was not present inLast of Usbut is part of the sequel.
The game is set to arrive in 2018, with gameplay and other reveals happening in the upcoming months. The information we have now reveals little, but we know that HBO’s “Westworld” writer Halley Gross is aco-writerfor The Last of Us Part II. The story is described as “intense” and focused on “hate” rather than part 1, which focused on the love between Joel and Ellie.
I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.
It’s still early days for the project—the game’s release is a ways off—but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.
The Last of Us 2 Trailer Analysis
At least 5 years have passed since the events of the previous game, and we are presented with a firefly symbol before proceeding into an abandoned residence, where several seemingly uninfected dead listen to Ellie’s rendition of “The Valley”. Her injured, tattooed hand is shaking, leaving for interpretation whether this is a result of the fungus infection or the adrenaline rush from her possibly murdering the people in the adjacent rooms. We see a man entering the house, holding a revolver and slowly walking towards Ellie. He rests on the doorframe and asks, revealed to be Joel only by his voice “What are you doing”, and “Are you really going to go through with this”. Her reply is a vicious look and “I’m gonna find and I’m gonna kill every last one of them”.

Fan Theories for Last of Us (Possible spoilers!)
Current speculations about the game’s setting and twist. They include the possiblity that Joel was killed by the Fireflies after the events of the first game, and thus Ellie is now on a revenge rampage and seeing Joel only in her imagination. Another theory is that Ellie is still susceptible to the virus that is now mutating and slowly taking her sanity away, and we are thus witnessing the infected’s point of view - an imaginary narrative to justify the violent fits they succumb to.
