The Pop Singer Was Accused of Tax Evasion Case for the Second Time
The Colombian pop star was charged with tax evasion for the second time by the Spanish government. Spanish prosecutors have charged Shakira with failing to pay $7.1 million in tax on her 2018 income, authorities have said, as perBBC.
She was alleged to have used an offshore company based in a tax haven to avoid paying the tax, Barcelona prosecutors said in a statement.
Barcelona prosecutors said that she failed to declare millions in advance payments for her El Dorado World Tour, among other payments. The prosecutors opened the second investigation in July 2023.
Although the Grammy winner’s official residence was in the Bahamas, Spanish prosecutors in Barcelona have claimed that she should have paid taxes in Spain because she spent more than half of the 2012–14 period there.
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has been associated with Spain ever since she began dating the now-retired soccer player Gerard Pique. The couple, who were together for 11 years and had two kids, resided in Barcelona until they broke up last year.
