When it comes to wearable technology, it’s mostly been about watches and wristbands. However, Oura has beenon a roll with rings. The company’s devices don’t come with distracting screens and, with the right fit, are practically guaranteed to produce accurate biometric readings. Withmorecompetitors jumping in, Samsung wants its own slice of the circle. The tech giant officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Ring on July 10th, though many of the details aren’t surprising given previous leaks.

Samsung Galaxy Ring release date

Available for pre-order now

At the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris on July 10, Samsung finally officially announced that the Galaxy Ring is ready for the world. It is available for pre-order now, with general availability beginning July 24.

Samsung Galaxy Ring design

Well, it’s a ring, isn’t it?

The Galaxy Ring is made of titanium and designed to be extremely durable. It’s rated for water depths up to 100 meters (10 ATM) and offers an IP68 rating for dust and water protection. Packed inside are an accelerometer, PPG and heart rate sensor, and skin temperature sensor. It’s available in black, silver, or gold.

The ring will come in US sizes 5 to 13. While the sizing itself isn’t all that interesting, it is novel that you can order the ring immediately if you already know your size. Typically, with smart rings, since the fit is so critical, you order a sizing kit first and then get the ring based on that. Samsung does offer a free sizing kit and suggests using that since it specifies that “sizing differs from US Standards due to internal sensors.” But you can skip the sizing kit process if you’re confident in your size and want the ring faster.

6 things to consider about a smart ring before getting one

Smart rings might seem neat, but they’re not for everyone.

The battery size will also scale with the size of the ring since larger rings, naturally, have more real estate. The battery will range from 18mAh for US 5 to 23.5mAh for US 13. Samsung promises seven days of battery life. The ring comes with a charging case with a 361mAh battery as well, so you could get a boost when on the go. The weight of the Galaxy ring varies from 2.3 g for US 5 to 3.2 g for US 13.

Samsung Galaxy Ring hardware and features

Sleep tracking is confirmed

As mentioned the Galaxy ring is packed with sensors. The ring will constantly sync with the Samsung Health app to give you a picture of your overall health. You’ll be able to see your sleep score, how much you moved during your sleep, heart rate, respiratory rate, and more.

You can set heart rate alerts in case you’re worried about your heart beating too fast or too slow. Samsung also introduced Energy Score, which offers suggestions throughout the day based on your score. Additionally, it will automatically detect workouts and alert you when you aren’t moving enough.

In addition to all those features, Samsung was especially excited in February to announce that the FDA has given the Samsung Health Monitor app a first-in-the-industry De Novo certification (that is, for novel devices) specifically for its new sleep apnea detection feature. The feature is set to make its way to compatible Galaxy Watch and Galaxy phone devices, and now the ring, too. For those who aren’t aware of how much their breathing is obstructed at night but do know they’re waking up horribly with side effects lasting all day, this will likely be a game changer.

Samsung Galaxy Ring pricing

Subscription free use

The Galaxy Ring is priced at $399.99. Most importantly, though, Samsung was clear that there are no subscription fees associated with the ring. You pay the upfront cost and don’t have to worry about anything else. That’s a big win over the rival Oura Ring, and we were very relieved to hear that the Galaxy Ring is subscription-free.

Samsung Galaxy Ring

The Galaxy Ring is Samsung’s first smart ring, capable of heart, movement, and sleep tracking, but in a smaller body that’s easy to wear all day and night.
