Kristen Stewartis continuing to distance herself fromTwilightby moving further down the path of indie dramas. This is evidenced by her latest effort,Personal Shopper, which made its debut at Cannes earlier this year. The movie is getting released next year and the first teaser trailer has made its way online.
IFC Filmsuploaded the teaser to their YouTube channel recently, giving us our first look at thecreepy thriller.Personal Shopperhas been fairly divisive among critics who have seen it so far, but there are certain elements that have been praised highly.Olivier Assayatook home Best Director at Cannes this year for his work on the movie, which may be a good enough reason to check it out. Here is the official synopsis forPersonal Shopper.
“Olivier Assayas, the internationally-acclaimed director of Clouds of Sils Maria and Summer Hours, returns with this ethereal and mysterious ghost story starringKristen Stewartas a high-fashion personal shopper to the stars who is also a spiritual medium. Grieving the recent death of her twin brother, she haunts his Paris home, determined to make contact with him.”
The trailer for the movie seems to focus much more on the ghost story aspect ofPersonal Shopper. So much so that it seemingly makes one question the title of the movie and what the main character being a professionalhigh-fashion shopperhas to do with it, but this is just a teaser trailer. Not only that, but this has been quite a good year for horror movies at the box office, so it would make sense that the studio would want to market the movie in that way to potentially get the most bang for their buck.
This is not the first time thatKristen StewartandOlivier Assayashave teamed up together. The pair also worked on the drama.Clouds of Sils Maria, which was met with quite a bit of critical acclaim when it was released last year.Kristen Stewarthas been making more of a habit of showing up in more award-worthy movies lately, such asStill Alice, which managed to earnJulianne Moorean Oscar win.Kristen Stewarthas yet to earn anOscar nominationfor herself, even though she has been in such close proximity to worthy work.Personal Shopperdoesn’t seem like it is likely to change that fact, but she appears to be sticking mostly to projects that are more in that realm, so she may be able to ditch theTwilightstigma eventually.
Personal Shopperalso starsLars Eidinger,Anders Danielsen LieandBenjamin Biolay. The movie is currently scheduled to open on June 11, 2025, which is a pretty friendly release date in the sense that it can act as a bit of counter-programming toKong: Skull Island, which also comes out that same day.
