Spaceballs
Released way back in 1987,Spaceballswas co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks, and takes satirical aim at the Star Wars franchise alongside other well-known sci-fi properties. Starring Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, Spaceballs takes place in a distant galaxy on the titular planet and follows renegade space pilot Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf as they attempt to rescue Princess Vespa, who has been kidnapped by the evil Dark Helmet.
Gad is now working onSpaceballs 2alongside Amazon MGM Studios, with original writer and director andcomedy icon Mel Brooksproducing the project.

While details ofwhat theSpaceballssequel will involveremain under wraps at present, including whether any of the original cast will return or if Gad himself will play a role, Gad has previously described his involvement in the project as a dream come true. Taking toInstagramback in June, he said:
“Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true. [Benji Samit], [Dan Hernandez], [Josh Greenbaum], [Kevin Salter] and I worship at the altar of all things Brooks and we are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING.”

Josh Greenbaum, who is best known for his work on various sitcoms includingNew GirlandFresh Off the Boat, as well as feature endeavors such asWill & Harper, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,andStrays,is all set to direct the comedy sequel. The script is currently being penned by Gad alongside writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who are best known for the likes ofTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem,Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Addams Family 2,and the Disney+ and Lucasfilm specialLego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.
At the time,Spaceballswas met with largely mixed reviews from critics. However, the science fiction parody has since garnered a passionate cult following, meaning that the sequel has a whole lot to live up to. Thankfully,Spaceballs 2will have plenty of material to pull from, including superhero movies and the ever-expanding (and now deeply divisive)Star Warsfranchise, which formed the basis of the firstSpaceballsouting.
