During an interview withScreen Rant, Mangold revealed that his inspiration for the film was to explore the origins of the Force and answer the question of where it all began. He compared it to a “Star Wars Zero” that would provide answers to the questions fans have been asking for years.
Mangold also shared his filmmaking philosophy, which centers on answering a singular question in every movie. He believes a film should be more than just a plot and have a deeper meaning that audiences can connect with. ForDawn of the Jedi, the question at the center of the movie is the discovery of the Force, which could provide a fresh perspective on the beloved franchise and add a new layer of depth to the mythology.

“The idea of where it all started. To make a Star Wars Zero, if you will. “Where was the Force born?” To me a movie always has to have a question to answer. Some singular thing that you can say it’s about. Not just connecting plot of who built this when and who’s gonna defeat, but what’s it about? And to me this is about this discovery.”

James Mangold Envisions Dawn of the Jedi as a Biblical Epic
James Mangold has referred to the upcoming Star Wars movie,Dawn of the Jedi, as a biblical epic. Mangold shared that during his discussions with Kathleen Kennedy, he contemplated which genre of film would be most fitting for aStar Warspicture. After some reflection, he arrived at the idea of a biblical epic, akin to the Ten Commandments, which would delve into the origins of the Force. He wondered where it came from, when it was first discovered, and how it was learned to be used. With this thought process, Mangold found himself inspired to bring this grand story to the big screen.
“When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do. And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”
