Known for its amazing fights,Narutohas several of them that are a great mix of emotional and adrenaline-inducing moments. For instance, when the emotional turmoil of Sasuke and the desperation ofNaruto to bring back his friend clashed at the End Valley. The set-up of these fights make the eventual pay-off more satisfying. However, sometimes the seriousness of the situation is undermined by other aspects, like animation.

Over the years, fans have stated their disappointment with the occasional goofiness in fights that are otherwise visually exciting inNaruto. The random silliness disrupts the momentum, dampening the overall enjoyment. This is also the reason why the ‘never pauseNaruto‘ meme became so popular. This problem became the most apparent near the end of the Konoha Assault arc.
The Questionable Animation During Pain Arc inNaruto
Naruto had trained hard before his fight with Pain. He put up a great fight with Sage mode, but the moment Hinata got involved his rage reached new heights. Usually, four tails were more than enough to incur severe damage. In that moment, he unleashed six tails. Pain was able to keep up with him during that state, and it was truly fascinating to see them go back and forth with inhuman movements.

However, the way the fight has been animated, there are moments when Pain appears warped. It happens frequently throughout the fight. Fans have voiced their displeasure with the poor animation and the staff’s handling of such a crucial storyline.
What appeared to be off-putting during the Pain fight might have been an intentional choice. As some fans pointed out, how the animation was exaggerated with the intention to depict the intensity. This unique animation was usually limited to fights; so, seeing it for the entirety of an episode was bound to be shocking. The concerns of fans are valid but at the same time, it needs to considered that there was more to the fight than just the cost and timing.

Bad Animation or a Creative Approach?
These questionable instances during the fights can’t be dismissed as poor animation.Narutofights are known for their top-notch choreography that is both fluid and smooth. During the fight at the End Valley in the original anime, both the characters were furious. Sasuke unleashed the power of the cursed seal, whereas Naruto was fighting with Kurama’s chakra. Their fast movements and emotions were erratic.
The way the fight scenes were animated, the viewer could grasp the emotional state of the characters as well as the physical intensity. Similarly, the main focus during the Pain fight might have been on the overall depiction of the fight sequence, rather than the individual frames. Moreover, the manga already features singular frames that put great emphasis on the characters. So the different approach followed by the anime added an interesting twist to the fight we had seen in the manga.

Pain and Narutowere destroying terrains, the fight was fueled by bloodlust. There was nothing beyond it in that moment. While it might not have been aesthetically pleasing or in alignment with everything we had seen prior, it conveyed the gravity of the situation quite well. So, it wasn’t essentially a case of poor animation, but rather a more experimental and artistic approach.
