Rockstar Games has announced today that it has acquired the modding team Cfx.re, which is behind the highly popular FiveM and RedM modding tools, which have gained a lot of traction since the Covid-19 pandemic on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar Games

“Today, we are proud to announce that Cfx.re – the team behind the biggest Rockstar roleplay and creator communities, FiveM and RedM – are now officially a part of Rockstar Games,” Rockstar Games stated

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers. As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community”

This comes as quite a shock to some players, due to Rockstar previous stance towards modders. Back in 2015, the team who created the FiveM mod ended up banned, with private investigators sent to their homes by Take-Two. More recently, five modders had been sued by Rockstar for reverse engineering the GTA 3 and GTA Vice City source code.

What are roleplay mods and what does it mean for players and Rockstar Games going forward?

Roleplay mods is a multiplayer mod for the PC version of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 which allows players to jump into a custom server, allowing you to play more unique and customised stories. NPCs in the city of Los Santos will be affected depending on the player’s actions, making them behave differently from the base game. Other changes can include higher player counts, weapons, custom cars, weapons and player-created maps.

Unfortunately, Cfx.re was quick to halt fan’s questions regarding any GTA 6 information with its official forum post “And for those curious about what else Rockstar is working on, please understand that our partnership with Rockstar Games is focused on our FiveM and RedM platforms. So please, do not ask us about the next GTA!”

Both stated “We look forward to sharing more in the weeks and months ahead” and “We can’t wait to see what the future brings”. If Rockstar is embracing the modding culture it could mean great things for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. FiveM currently has a concurrent player count of around 250,000 players which is the kind of numbers Rockstar would want to bring over to GTA 6 once it releases.
