While July certainly doesn’t qualify as tornado season,Twistersis still coming. The long-awaited follow-up to the Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt-ledTwister(1996) is storming its way toward its theatrical release next month. And the long-range numbers predictGlen Powell’sTwistersis swirling toward an opening-weekend total somewhere in the neighborhood of $45 million to $50 million (perDeadline). But the disaster flick could be headed toward an even biggerbox officedebut.
According to the long-range forecast provided byBoxoffice Pro,which is calculated approximately a month out from the film’s debut in mid-July,Twistersis more likely to make $65 million on the low end and possibly $95 million on the high side. Certainly, that would constitute one of the better theatrical openings of the 2024 summer movie season.

A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith, with Frank Marshal as producer. Little details exist about the film, but Helen Hunt is expected to reprise her role as Jo, with the film likely to pay homage to the late Bill Paxton.
So far,Inside Out 2has been the best performer at the summertime box office with a domestic take of $387.9 million and $411.9 million internationally for a worldwide total of $799.8 million (perBox Office Mojo), at the time of this writing. In fact, the “emotional” animated feature film seems on its way to winning its third weekend in a row at No. 1 as theInside Outsequel is predicated to make another $55 million to $60 million domestically alone.

Glen Powell Insists Twisters Is ‘Definitely Not a Reboot’
Jan de Bont declared there is no remakingTwister(1996).The famed cinematographer worked on the disaster movie, which opened in theaters almost 30 years ago.Twisterfeatured an all-star cast, including Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, Jamie Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Lois Smith. However, none of those living members from the original cast are set to return inTwisters, according to star Glen Powell. TheAnyone but YouandTop Gun: Maverickactor said in an interview withVogue:
“It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day. I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.’”
