Gearboxhas showcased 20 minutes ofBorderlands 4gameplay with footage captured onPlayStation 5 Pro. The presentation revealed two of the four new characters, along with new mechanics, weapons, and more.
Borderlands 4 Extensive Gameplay
The game takes place on a new planet calledKairos, controlled by a villain known as theTimekeeper, who rules through cybernetic implants and a synthetic army. The story will revolve around freeing this oppressed population, featuring both new and familiar characters, creatures, and factions spread across four distinct regions.
Among the new gameplay features are mechanics such asgliding,wall climbing, anddriving a new vehiclecalled theDigirunner. Additionally, the weapon system has been revamped, allowing forpiece combinations from different manufacturers, anew equipment systemthat enhances weaponry, and tools like theRep KitandOrdnanceto offer more variety and strategy in combat.
As for the arsenal,Borderlands 4introducesthree new weapon manufacturers—Order,Ripper, andDaedalus—each with distinct traits. Thanks to the newLicensed Partssystem, weapons can now combine properties from multiple brands, offering unprecedented customization.Legendary itemswill be rarer but significantly more valuable than in previous entries.
Cooperative Multiplayer Redefined
Gearbox emphasizes that the newBorderlandsisexplicitly designed to encourage cooperative multiplayer, withshared but personalized progression,individual loot, anddifficulty scaling.
They explain that co-op multiplayer has beenredesigned for easier access, includingsplit-screen,full cross-play at launch, andsynchronized level and difficulty between players. Players will be able to join online teammates directly viafast travel.
Therelease dateforBorderlands 4has beenmoved upfromSeptember 23 to July 09, 2025, forPS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PCviaSteam and Epic Games Store.A version forNintendo Switch 2is planned for a later date. Gearbox has stated that the change is not related to other releases, such as GTA 6, but rather due to the game’s smooth development progress.
